Subnautica adds a new depth to the genre, quite literally, as you explore and survive in the sprawling depths of an alien ocean. From zombie-infested cities and frozen woodlands to apocalyptic wastelands and everything in between, we've built shelters, faced dangerous nights, and crafted gear across a plethora of locales and scenarios. It’s still in Steam Early Access, but if you liked this game, go and throw some money at the developers by buying Below Zero and trying it out for yourself! Aw, look at him! He just wants a hug!Īs for me, I’ll be back with a review of Subnautica: Below Zero once the full version comes out.I doubt anyone would disagree if you said the open world-crafting-survival genre has become over-saturated in recent years. And best of all, there’s even a sequel out called Subnautica: Below Zero. What’s not to like about this game? If you’re a fan of survival games, open world exploration games, underwater games, sci-fi games, or even funny games you can go no wrong with Subnautica. You can play with it, feed it mysteriously appearing biscuits, and perform magic tricks for it to boot! I shall name him Squishy. It looks like someone stuck a pug on top of an octopus, but it is surprisingly adorable. You can build as many underwater condominiums as you want without some pesky zoning officials complaining about building regulations! A fine example of a Subnautica-brand multistory underwater apartment with attached utilities, all yours for free! (Some assembly required, will need to provide own building materials and construction crew) Pets!Īnd if those weren’t enough, Subnautica even allows you to have underwater fish buddies! Well, one buddy specifically. God rays galore! More god rays! Nice change of pace from the god rays, eh? Build!īest of all, you can not only stare at the gorgeous scenery, you can also build on them! When you’re the only human on an alien planet, everywhere is free real estate. ![]() The developers obviously have put a lot of effort into making eye candy out of the ocean around you. The scenery of Subnautica is just gorgeous, and will often make you forget that you have to breathe. If you can survive the attacks of alien Jaws though, you’ll find an alien oceanscape that’s worth taking photos of. Sammy the Safety Reaper telling you that you are not safe. Much bigger fish that look at a little human like you, and see a tasty bite-sized snack up for grabs. But included in that mix are bigger fish. ![]() The oceans of Subnautica are full of fish: small fish, tasty fish, and cute fish. It won’t just be your own survival needs to have to watch out for. It’s a good thing those alien fish can stick to your hand, eh? This little guy here is your best source of water at the start. Which isn’t much, and now you have to start gathering food, water, and resources to help you not die. You’re very quickly and violently not on a spaceship anymore, and now you’re stuck floating on an alien ocean with nothing but your escape pod and the little stuff that’s in it. ![]() The basic premise of the story is that you were on a spaceship, with an emphasis on were. It was developed by Unknown Worlds Entertainment, and was officially released on Januafter over 3 years spent in Early Access on Steam. Subnautica is an open world underwater survival action-adventure game. ![]()
